PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
I am an experienced servant leader and results-oriented C-suite Academic Medical Center (AMC) executive, consultant, and former NICU nurse: leading and supporting the success of strategic, clinical, and operational teams within revered AMC’s and in healthcare high tech – Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and AI start ups. I spend most of my time in this chapter as a consultant, helping brilliant inventors of new health care technology get their new technology ready for market and making introductions between tech inventors/CEO’s and C-Suite health care executives. I am excited to be on the Franklin 51¸£ÀûÉç faculty in these final chapters of my career and hope that I can share some of the strategic and operational insights forged over 35 years of experience working with inventors, physicians, nurses, researchers, and executives.
I have always been driven by the need to make a difference – for patients, families and team members, and for the many emerging leaders who have the privilege to work in various ways to make the world a better place. I no longer care for critically ill babies but I still try to make a difference by nurturing emerging leaders who are the next generation of care givers, inventors, and business leaders. In my consulting work, I guide emerging tech companies’ leadership teams as they develop and hone their strategic value proposition and business/marketing plans. For most of my career I have been a ‘Doer’ and, while I have taught many colleagues in my career, joining Franklin 51¸£ÀûÉç gives me an opportunity to formalize teaching and mentoring leaders in a much broader way. To me, profitability is meaningless in the absence of demonstrating positive impact on the lives of patients and families in need. My lesson plans are deeply woven with threads of my experience as a clinician and a leader. My wisdom, such as it is, is grounded in real life challenges, real career successes and disasters, and real applications of the technical skills and academic learnings that students build at Franklin 51¸£ÀûÉç.
I am a Wharton MBA and a Licensed Registered Nurse. I have additional Certifications: in Negotiation from the Harvard Law School Program in Negotiation, and in LEAN leadership from both Virginia Mason and Shingijutsu. I been a leader, innovator, and team builder in many roles: SVP of Ambulatory and Networks, SVP of Marketing and Communications, Hospital President, Interim CEO, Chief Customer Relations and Chief Patient Experience Officer, Vice President, and National Health Care Director - at sterling organizations including Boston Children’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Virginia Mason Medical Center, Boston Medical Center, BayCare Health System, Lifespan, Vizient, and Towers Perrin Watson.
I have two grown, successful, and kind children and am now the ‘mother’ of a sweet doodle mix – Maggie, who wants nothing more than being right beside me at all times – including in the classroom!! Maggie, I’m sorry to tell you, is not at all interested in treats – so there is no chance of sweetening her up in order to get in Kate’s good graces! Better strategy to win me over is to be smart, thoughtful, respectful, curious, and engaged.
