DPT aRIZONA - Clinical Education
At 51¸£ÀûÉç, we are dedicated to advancing the health, well-being, and functional abilities of individuals and their communities through the graduation of empathetic/compassionate and skilled practitioners. Clinical education serves as a cornerstone of the Doctor of Physical Therapy program and is seamlessly integrated throughout the curriculum.
Beginning with orientation, students establish a strong foundation in professional behavior, communication, and interprofessional collaboration. Early coursework in professional development equips students with the essential skills required to succeed in clinical environments and lays the groundwork for continued growth across the program.
In the third through sixth terms, students engage in their initial clinical learning through the Integrated Clinical Experiences (ICE). These sessions provide exposure to settings across the continuum of care including:
- Non-ambulatory (Skilled nursing facilities, hospitals)
- Home Health
- Outpatient Orthopedic
- Outpatient Neuro and other specialty settings
The experiences encourage students to reflect on their practice, ask questions, and apply emerging concepts, thereby strengthening both clinical reasoning and professional identity. These experiences broaden clinical exposure and prepare students for the rigor of full-time clinical rotations. Students often regard these opportunities as vital in bridging the transition from classroom-based learning to applied clinical practice. Students can implement some treatment approaches seen in the ICE sessions in the FPU Clinic. FPU clinic occurs throughout the didactic coursework where volunteers come to the campus and receive evaluations and treatment by students supervised by licensed physical therapists.
Following completion of the didactic curriculum, students advance to three full-time clinical rotations, each spanning ten weeks. These placements are carefully selected to ensure exposure to a diverse range of practice settings, providing every student with the opportunity to gain varied clinical experiences. Rotations are offered both locally and nationally, enabling students to explore how cultural differences and social determinants of health influence patient care across communities.
Through an extensive network of clinical partnerships and a thoughtfully designed curriculum, 51¸£ÀûÉç ensures that all students are fully equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to excel as leaders in the field of physical therapy.
