Federal Direct Student Loans
The federal government has set limits on annual borrowing as well as lifetime (aggregate) borrowing per student. The aggregate loan limits include any Subsidized Federal Stafford Loans or Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans you may have previously received at a prior institution. If the total loan amount you receive over the course of your education reaches the aggregate loan limit, you are not eligible to receive additional loans for that degree level. However, if you repay some of your loans to bring the outstanding loan debt below the aggregate loan limit, you could then borrow again, up to the amount of your remaining eligibility under the aggregate loan limit.
The chart below outlines the federal loan limits:
| Level | Dependent Students*** | Independent Students |
|---|---|---|
| Freshman | $5,500 - maximum of $3,500 subsidized | $9,500 - maximum of $3,500 subsidized |
| Sophomore | $6,500 - maximum of $4,500 subsidized | $10,500 - maximum of $4,500 subsidized |
| Junior/Senior | $7,500 - maximum of $5,500 subsidized | $12,500 - maximum of $5,500 subsidized |
| Graduate /Professional | Not Applicable | $20,500 Unsubsidized |
| Aggregate Loan Limits | $31,000鈥 maximum of $23,000 subsidized | Graduate/professionals: $138,500 - maximum of $65,500 subsidized (includes all undergraduate federal loans) |
*** Dependent students whose parents are unable to obtain PLUS Loans are eligible for Independent student limits.
The funds are divided evenly between fall and spring semesters and disbursed after the add/drop period has ended each term. Shortly after disbursements are made, our students who have borrowed in excess of their billed costs will receive a refund of their account overage, issued by the Office of Student Financial Services.
